We cannot imagine cosmetics without them: oils. They are part of almost every formulation and serve as a basis as well as a nourishing ingredient for the skin. But not every oil is the same… While mineral oil is a typical ingredient in conventional cosmetics, natural cosmetic products contain a whole variety of plant-based oils. We will tell you all about the ups and downs.

There’s one reason in particular why mineral oil is a favorite of the beauty industry: in comparison with plant-based oils it is a cheap raw material which is easy to process and extremely versatile. Most of all, however, mineral oil has a long shelf life with no impact on its quality – plant-based oils simply can’t keep up with that.

Plant-based oils

Plant-based oils react with environmental factors and are susceptible to light and heat. Ranging from their extraction to their storage and use: compared to mineral oils they are real wimps. Nevertheless, plant-based oils have some clear advantages. They integrate particularly well into the skin’s protective barrier, they are very well tolerated and environmentally friendly and they are so much more than only a basic ingredient: whatever their function, they contribute a whole range of active ingredients to a product.

Moreover, plant-based oils are true all-rounders: they best unfold their talents in combination with moisturizing components. Thus, a full variety of plant-based oils is used in BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE products. For example, we use sesame, argan, almond, broccoli and sunflower oil, to name but a few.

Mineral oil

And what about mineral oil? A real no-go for us! Just like fuel, the cosmetic ingredient is also extracted from crude oil. Even if mineral oil makes your complexion smooth and supple on the surface it does not really provide any genuine added value. The oil merely forms a film on the skin, but is not absorbed. This occlusive film on the surface will lead to dryness, irritation and impurities or even wrinkles. And worst of all: the skin loses its ability to regulate itself. This may even result in a form of addiction to the product.

Moreover, mineral oil is a very complex mixture. Amongst other components, it consists of aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH). According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), these may contain mutagenic and carcinogenic components. So keep your hands off these…

Easier said than done: You cannot be 100% sure whether a product is free from mineral oil just because you cannot find a respective indication in the list of ingredients or because there is a  “free from” indication on the label: many surfactants, chemical UV filters and preservatives are produced on the basis of crude oil. You can only be 100% sure if you use certified natural cosmetics such as BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE. Our products, for example, bear the COSMOS seal which generally prohibits the use of mineral oil.
