Antioxidants and vitamin E are the best reasons why prickly pear oil is the perfect anti-aging ingredient. The presumably most expensive oil in the world definitely has a lot to offer when it comes to slowing down the natural aging of the skin. But there’s more to it than that.

Special things come at a price – and are often not easy to get. That’s also true for this trend ingredient of which you’ve probably already heard: in order to obtain prickly pear oil, the egg-shaped fruits are harvested by hand from the cacti which can grow up to six meters high. They are then peeled and the seeds are carefully taken out. Afterwards, the seeds are washed and dried in the open air and then stored in a cool and dry place. In order to ensure the best quality, the cold pressing only takes place when the valuable oil is actually required. Before the pressing, the hard seeds are warmed up to 50 degrees Celsius: the heat ensures that they become softer and smoother.

Sounds like quite a process, doesn’t it? It’s not even a high-yielding production: about 450 kg of fruits are necessary to gain one liter of oil. The prickly pear oil is furthermore filtered repeatedly so that, in the end, it has its typical golden and yellow color – no wonder it is so expensive.

Inner values

Prickly pear oil has a high concentration of essential fatty acids. The share of unsaturated fatty acids alone is more than 88%, among them the essential linoleic acid. Our organism needs linoleic acid for different metabolic processes, but our body cannot produce it itself. For example, linoleic acid stimulates the production of prostaglandin. That’s a hormone which prevents all kinds of inflammations in our body – and that’s what makes prickly pear oil perfect for the use in beauty products.

Prickly pear oil also has an antioxidant effect: free radicals which are responsible for the skin-aging process are formed when our organism is exposed to negative influences, for example cigarette smoke, environmental toxins, blue light, alcohol … Prickly pear oil can protect the immune cells by making free radicals harmless. This way, oxidative stress will become a thing of the past.

In terms of regeneration, prickly pear oil is also a perfect choice: it supports the general cell renewal and slows down the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can furthermore make the complexion appear more radiant, smoother and healthier. The amino acid proline contained in the oil is of relevance for the formation of new connective tissue – prickly pear oil is therefore a real insider tip against cellulite.

Prickly pear oil can be applied from head to toe: apply a small amount after taking a shower or a bath and massage gently into the slightly damp skin. A major advantage: it is absorbed quickly and it’s not greasy. Psst: prickly pear oil also smooths your hair structure and can make your hair all shiny and soft. We recommend using it as an oily massage to strengthen the hair fibers but it’s also perfect as a hair mask for the hair-ends.
